Producers Support National Identification Through Tag Price Increase
You will see that our tag prices have increased with every RFID tag now costing an additional $0.40, effective June 1st. Every RFID tag carries a levy that is issued to fund the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency. The following is a message from CCIA:
The fee increase is the remittance paid by manufacturers to CCIA and the increase from $0.20 to $0.60 is the first increase since the inception of the program in 1998, even though the program has grown in complexity based on industry reliance and requirements. As a result, the resources needed to support it have grown in scope and the revenue has to match the needs, if industry is to be supported and CCIA meet its obligations.
If we had not increased the tag remittance at this time, CCIA would have had no option, but to wind down operations and turn the system over to the government. This was not acceptable to the Board or the members, as the CCIA has been industry-led and directed from its inception and from their perspective, it is crucial to maintain the control and be able to influence the implementation of full traceability.
